HOPEWELL, Va. — A deadly shooting in Hopewell Friday night has left a 34-year-old man dead and another man facing multiple felony charges.
Police responded to the area of Arlington Road and Raleigh Street at approximately 8:39 p.m. on September 5, 2025, following reports of an unresponsive male. When officers arrived, they found Travis Lamont Coleman, 34, of Hopewell, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrest Made Within 24 Hours
The following day, investigators announced the arrest of 42-year-old Johnnie Terrell McGhee, formerly of Richmond. McGhee has been charged with:
Second-Degree Murder
Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
Shooting in a Public Place Resulting in Injury
Hopewell Police Chief Gregory Taylor praised the swift response of both patrol officers and detectives, along with assistance from the community, which led to the rapid apprehension of the suspect.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including the motive and relationship between the suspect and the victim. Police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as the case develops.
