HOUSTON, Tex. — Authorities have filed charges in connection with the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Jakayla Alfred, who was found unresponsive at an apartment on 705 Lorraine Street on the evening of August 4, 2025.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) responded to a “person down” call around 6:25 p.m. and discovered Alfred deceased at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that she had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Investigators identified her partner, 30-year-old Gustavo Lerma, as the suspect. Lerma was initially taken into custody on unrelated charges by HPD’s Northeast Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team and was formally charged with murder in the 209th Criminal District Court on September 6, 2025.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Jakayla Alfred’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” officials said.
