The community is mourning the loss of Edwin Burton II, of Illinois, who tragically died in a workplace accident on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, while working at Eastern Kentucky University’s Richmond campus.

According to officials, Edwin was carrying out contracted maintenance work in the basement of Telford Hall when a large piece of equipment broke loose and fell, causing fatal injuries. Despite the swift arrival of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, Eastern Kentucky University expressed condolences, saying:
“We are saddened to confirm that a contractor performing work on our Richmond campus was involved in a fatal incident today. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues.”
Edwin is remembered by loved ones as a hardworking and kind-hearted man whose dedication extended well beyond his profession. To his family, friends, and colleagues, he was more than a skilled worker—he was a son, a friend, and a valued member of his community.
