HARRISONBURG, Va. — The James Madison University community is grieving the loss of Benjamin T. “Ben” Delp, a passionate advocate for education and public service who played a pivotal role in advancing JMU’s mission. Delp, who served as the university’s Director of Federal Relations and Communications, passed away recently, leaving behind an enduring legacy of mentorship, scholarship, and civic engagement.

Advocate for Research and Innovation
Delp devoted his career to strengthening connections between JMU and the broader academic, governmental, and private sectors. He worked closely with faculty and students to help them secure funding, research collaborations, and professional opportunities, ensuring the university’s expertise was widely recognized.
He was particularly committed to the Intelligence Analysis program, frequently sharing his experience through lectures and personal guidance that inspired students to pursue meaningful careers in national security and policy.
Thought Leader and Community Builder
Beyond campus, Delp was regarded as an authority on energy and cybersecurity issues. He contributed to The CIP Report and co-authored chapters in respected homeland security texts, including Understanding Homeland Security: Policy, Perspectives, and Paradoxes and Homeland Security: Principles and Practice of Terrorism Response.
Delp also brought his talents to public service, serving on the COVITS Advisory Board, helping organize the Harrisonburg Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and spearheading an annual Thanksgiving food drive to support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
Proud Alumnus and Mentor
A two-time graduate of JMU, Delp earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with Honors and a Master of Public Administration through the Institute for Infrastructure and Information Assurance. Friends and colleagues describe him as a tireless mentor who invested deeply in the growth of those around him, combining professionalism with warmth and generosity.
“Ben had an incredible ability to bridge ideas and action,” a longtime coworker reflected. “He believed in people and in the power of education to create lasting change.”
