The La Junta community is mourning the loss of John Wesley Canaday Sr., a beloved Air Force veteran and lifelong public servant who passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 24, 2025, at the age of 72.
Born on January 28, 1953, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, John lived a life defined by dedication, service, and compassion. His journey was one of hard work and humility, marked by an unwavering commitment to his country, his family, and his community.

John proudly served nine years in the U.S. Air Force, working as an electrician within the Strategic Air Command. His outstanding service earned him several commendations, including being named Airman of the Year in 1976—a recognition that reflected his exceptional skill and discipline.
Following his honorable military service, John transitioned into civilian life, applying his technical expertise in the HVAC and maintenance industries. He rose through the ranks to become Plant Manager at a local pickle factory, and later served as Maintenance Facility Manager for La Junta Public Schools, where his leadership and reliability made him a respected figure among staff and students alike.
Those who knew John remember him as a man of quiet strength and generosity. He was always ready to lend a helping hand—whether fixing a neighbor’s broken heater, volunteering for church repairs, or offering guidance to younger colleagues. Friends say his greatest joy came from serving others and spending time with his family.
“John never sought attention for his good deeds,” one community member shared. “He simply believed in doing what was right and helping wherever he could. His example inspired everyone around him.”
Beyond his professional achievements, John will be remembered for his faith, humility, and deep sense of community. His life embodied the values of service and integrity that defined both his military and civilian years.
