Officers were dispatched around 8:50 p.m. on September 28 to the 1400 block of Jefferson Avenue for a reported medical emergency. Upon arrival, they discovered Stingley unconscious. He was rushed to Northwest Health La Porte, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators determined that Stingley’s stepson, Breon M. Ware, allegedly strangled him during a domestic dispute. Ware was taken into custody at the scene, and detectives obtained search warrants as part of the ongoing investigation. A shotgun reportedly in Ware’s possession was also recovered.

An autopsy conducted September 30 confirmed asphyxiation as the cause of death. Detectives later uncovered that Ware had a prior serious violent felony conviction from 2013, legally prohibiting him from owning or carrying firearms.

The La Porte County Prosecutor’s Office has since charged Ware with:

Murder

Serious Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm (Level 4 Felony)

Police stressed that the case was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains active as prosecutors prepare to pursue the case.
