The New Hampshire State Police is investigating the death of Bonita Johnston, 73, of Laconia, who drowned Monday evening in Opechee Bay.
Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 7:11 p.m. on August 18, 2025, after the NHSP Marine Patrol was alerted to a possible drowning near the Lakeview Estates Beach.
Witnesses told investigators that Johnston had been swimming alone when she was last seen in the water around 7 p.m. Moments later, bystanders noticed her floating face down and rushed to the beach. Two good Samaritans attempted to perform lifesaving measures until first responders arrived, but despite their efforts, Johnston was pronounced dead at Concord Hospital – Laconia.
An autopsy later revealed that Johnston suffered a medical event while swimming, which led to her drowning.
Marine Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Laconia Police Department and Laconia Fire Department.
Authorities are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Haroutunian at (603) 293-2037 or by email at Nicholas.M.Haroutunian@dos.nh.gov
