According to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., deputies responded at about 11:06 p.m. to the 9900 block of Sheffield Avenue following reports of a collision. Initial findings revealed that a northbound driver believed they had struck a deer but, upon returning to the area, discovered the victim was a pedestrian.

Investigators say Vander Zanden had been walking along the east side of Sheffield Avenue, wearing dark clothing in an area without streetlights — conditions authorities believe may have played a role in the crash.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Coroner’s Office, continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
