METAIRIE, La. — Chaos erupted Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Shopping Center when shoppers panicked over reports of a possible shooting, prompting a temporary lockdown at one of the New Orleans area’s busiest malls.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at the mall, located at 3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd, when rumors of an active shooter spread through the building. Crowds rushed toward exits, knocking over displays and causing injuries amid the scramble.

Emergency responders from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and local EMS units arrived within minutes. Three people were treated for minor injuries sustained during the frantic evacuation and were transported to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Mall management issued a text alert to store managers shortly after the incident, confirming that no shots were fired and advising staff to remain secured until police completed their search.
“No shooting occurred at Lakeside Mall. Out of an abundance of caution, the mall remains temporarily locked down while officers ensure everyone’s safety,” the internal message read.
