A 50-year-old Madison man, identified as Steve Hastreiter, was killed Saturday evening in a single-vehicle accident on a rural Stanton County road, according to Sheriff Mike Unger.
Emergency crews were called shortly after 6 p.m. to 559th Avenue between 826th and 827th roads, about a mile and a half south of Highway 32. Investigators determined that Hastreiter was driving a pickup truck southbound when it left the roadway and struck a dirt embankment. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said people who had been with Hastreiter earlier in the day began searching for him after he left a residence and failed to return. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
The roadway was closed temporarily as deputies investigated the scene, with Madison Fire and Rescue providing assistance. Officials confirmed this was Stanton County’s first fatal crash of 2025.
