The Magnolia, Delaware community is reeling after the tragic death of 20-year-old Tamia Gordon, a promising Delaware State University sophomore, who was fatally shot in what authorities describe as a preventable and tragic accident on the evening of September 30, 2025.
According to the Delaware State Police, troopers responded around 7:30 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 800 block of Millchop Lane. Upon arrival, officers found Gordon suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was later pronounced dead from her injuries.

Investigators have since arrested 23-year-old Chase Washington of Magnolia in connection with the shooting. Court documents reveal that Washington—who was known to Gordon—was recklessly handling a loaded firearm inside a residence when it discharged, striking her. He now faces multiple charges, including felony manslaughter and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Washington remains in custody at the Sussex Correctional Institution on $100,000 cash bail.
Authorities have emphasized that the shooting was not an intentional act of violence, but rather a tragic lapse in judgment that ended an innocent life.
Tamia’s death has left her family and friends shattered. Loved ones describe her as a vibrant, caring, and ambitious young woman—someone whose laughter could fill a room and whose dreams stretched far beyond the classroom.
“She was loving, generous, and full of promise,” her family wrote in a statement accompanying a GoFundMe campaign launched to support funeral expenses. “Tamia’s life was stolen far too soon by a moment of recklessness.”
