Peregian Springs, QLD – A shocking and tragic incident unfolded yesterday evening at a childcare centre in Peregian Springs, Sunshine Coast, where a 28-year-old man died in front of staff, children, and responding police.

Police and emergency services were called to the centre shortly after 6 p.m. on August 18, 2025, following reports of a disturbance. According to initial details, the man had forced entry into the facility and was self-harming when officers arrived.
Authorities attempted to negotiate with him before taking him into custody. However, he became unresponsive shortly afterward. Despite immediate first aid from police and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thankfully, no children or staff members inside the centre were physically harmed during the ordeal.
Police confirmed that the Ethical Standards Command is investigating the man’s death on behalf of the State Coroner, with independent oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
The distressing incident has left a deep emotional impact on staff, children, and families associated with the centre. Support services have been made available, with community leaders acknowledging the courage of educators who acted quickly to protect children.
“This has been an incredibly distressing event for everyone present,” a spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the children, families, educators, and first responders who were involved and witnessed this traumatic situation.”
Authorities are also urging the public to prioritize mental health support.
