SWANSEA, Massachusetts — A tragic incident at Meadowridge Academy has left the community in mourning after a staff member, 53-year-old Amy Morrell, died following an alleged assault by a 14-year-old student.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening around 6:55 p.m. when Morrell and other staff members tried to stop the student from leaving a dormitory building without permission. During the confrontation, the student reportedly kicked Morrell in the chest, causing her to collapse moments later.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported Morrell to a nearby hospital, where she passed away the following afternoon. The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed by the medical examiner.
Authorities have charged the 14-year-old student with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury. The teen appeared in Juvenile Court in Fall River and is currently being held in custody as the investigation continues.
In a statement, Meadowridge Academy expressed deep sadness over Morrell’s death, describing her as a dedicated and compassionate staff member who cared deeply for the students she served. “Our hearts are with Amy’s family, friends, and colleagues during this devastating time,” the school said, adding that counseling and support services have been made available to both students and staff.
The Massachusetts State Police and Swansea Police Department are investigating the incident. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges depending on the findings of the autopsy.
Meadowridge Academy, a residential program that supports students with emotional and behavioral challenges, has faced scrutiny in the past over safety concerns and staff-student interactions. This latest tragedy has renewed calls for stronger protective measures for educators and mental health workers in such environments.
