Milton School District Mourns Beloved Teacher Sonya Ferguson

The Milton Area School District is grieving the sudden death of Sonya (Quick) Ferguson, a cherished second-grade teacher at Baugher Elementary School, who passed away Wednesday morning after experiencing a medical emergency on campus.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY - GOD BLESS YOU

Superintendent Dr. John Bickhart shared the heartbreaking news in a statement to families and staff, describing Ferguson as a dedicated educator whose impact extended far beyond the classroom.

“With heavy hearts, we share the passing of second-grade teacher, Sonya Ferguson,” his message read. “Her love and dedication touched countless lives. Please keep her family, students, and our Milton community in your thoughts and prayers.”

Emergency Response and Community Shock

Emergency crews were called to Baugher Elementary after Ferguson collapsed during the school day. Despite swift intervention, she could not be revived. News of her passing has sent shockwaves through the district, leaving students, parents, and colleagues in mourning.

Remembering a Devoted Educator

Ferguson was remembered as a warm, compassionate teacher who inspired her students to love learning. Colleagues called her “a bright light in the classroom,” while parents praised her for making every child feel valued.

“She made learning fun and always believed in her students,” one parent shared online. “My child loved being in her class — she truly cared for every kid she taught.”

Grief Support and Memorial Plans

To help the school community cope with the loss, grief counselors have been made available for students and staff. District leaders are urging families to lean on one another for support during this difficult time.

Funeral services honoring Ferguson’s life will take place on Thursday, October 9, at First Baptist Church in Danville. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. service. She will be laid to rest at St. Hubert Cemetery, with a reception afterward at the church. An official obituary will be published in the Press Enterprise in the coming week.

Ferguson’s passing leaves a profound void in the Milton Area School District, where her years of devotion and kindness shaped the lives of countless children.

“Sonya’s legacy will live on in the hearts of the children she taught,” the district’s statement said. “She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
