Authorities have identified the employee who died in a tragic industrial accident at Palermo’s Pizza manufacturing facility as Robert Cherone, 45, of Milwaukee.

According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, the incident happened early Wednesday at the company’s plant near 38th Street and Lincoln Avenue. Investigators say Cherone was crushed by a robotic machine inside the factory. Emergency crews responded quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, a Palermo’s spokesperson called the loss a heartbreaking event and said the company is fully cooperating with government officials as they work to determine how the accident occurred.
“The tragic accident that took an employee’s life earlier today is a terrible incident that is being fully investigated,” the company said. “We are supporting the employee’s family and next of kin, and counseling services will be made available to our team as we grieve this loss.”
Cherone’s death has shaken both his loved ones and coworkers, who described him as a dedicated employee and friend.
Investigators have not yet released additional details about the malfunction that led to the fatality. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is expected to take part in the ongoing investigation.
