The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) is investigating two separate crashes Tuesday evening that claimed the lives of motorists in Holmes and Attala counties.
Around 7:30 p.m., troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 17 near Pickens. Authorities said 41-year-old Michael Sims of Pickens was driving a 2018 Nissan Altima southbound when the car left the roadway and struck an embankment. Sims was pronounced dead at the scene.
About an hour later, at approximately 8:30 p.m., MHP was called to a head-on collision on Highway 14 near Goodman. According to investigators, 52-year-old Gayla Jones of Goodman was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt eastbound when her vehicle collided with a westbound 2015 Jeep Compass. Jones died at the scene, while the Jeep’s driver, 20-year-old Reggie Carter of Kosciusko, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Both crashes remain under investigation by MHP as troopers work to determine the circumstances leading up to the incidents.
