The Grand Rapids community is reeling after a deadly shooting Saturday evening at Mackay-Jaycees Park left one man dead and police searching for answers.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers were dispatched to the park, located on Kalamazoo Avenue near 28th Street, shortly after 7 p.m. on September 6, 2025, following reports of gunfire. Authorities said the incident began as a physical altercation before escalating into violence.
When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later identified him as John Doee, a visitor from Mobile, Alabama.
Witnesses reported chaos in the park as families and community members scrambled for safety following the gunshots. The public space, usually filled with recreational activities, quickly became the site of a large-scale police investigation.
Thus far, no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting, and police say the suspect remains at large. Detectives are actively working the case, reviewing surveillance footage, canvassing the area, and interviewing witnesses who may have seen what led to the deadly confrontation.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to step forward. “We know people were present when this happened, and their information could be critical in helping us find the person responsible. We are asking for the community’s assistance to bring justice to the victim and his family,” he said in a statement.
The tragedy has left John Doee’s family and friends in Alabama devastated. Community members in Grand Rapids have also expressed sorrow and concern over the violence, calling for answers and accountability.
