The Montgomery community is mourning an unspeakable tragedy after a deadly mass shooting in the city’s downtown area claimed the lives of 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalonda Morris late Saturday night.

According to the Montgomery Police Department, the violence erupted around 11:30 p.m. on October 4, 2025, near Commerce and Bibb Streets — an area packed with visitors attending the Alabama National Fair, the Morehouse–Tuskegee Classic, and Alabama State University’s homecoming weekend.
Authorities say 14 people were shot when gunfire broke out between two groups amid a large crowd. Jeremiah and Shalonda tragically lost their lives, while 12 others were injured, including five in critical condition and seven with non-life-threatening wounds. Police confirmed that several victims were teenagers, with the youngest just 16 years old.
Montgomery Police Chief Darrell Graboys described the scene as chaotic, with multiple firearms recovered and dozens of shell casings found. “This was a senseless act of violence that took two innocent lives and wounded many others,” Graboys said. “Our officers are pursuing every lead to ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
The loss of Jeremiah and Shalonda has left family, friends, and the wider community heartbroken. Loved ones describe them as caring, joyful individuals whose lives were cut short far too soon.
Authorities have announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved.
