The collision occurred around 5:28 p.m. on South Telegraph Road (U.S. 24), near West Stein Road. Emergency crews and deputies responded to reports of a severe head-on crash involving two vehicles. Investigators say Abbigal, driving a gray 2010 Toyota Corolla, crossed the centerline under circumstances still under review, colliding head-on with a 2015 Hyundai Sonata driven by 35-year-old Palmer G. Merkel of Temperance. The impact was catastrophic, with the Hyundai coming to rest in the middle of the roadway and Abbigal’s car pushed to the shoulder. Both drivers were transported to nearby hospitals, with Abbigal’s injuries proving fatal.
Merkel, who was also wearing a seatbelt, remains in serious condition at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. Authorities confirmed that seat belts were used by both drivers, though the force of the collision was severe, leading to life-threatening injuries. Local agencies, including the LaSalle Township Volunteer Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance, provided emergency medical care and emotional support to those affected by the tragedy.
