The small town of Morganton is in mourning after the sudden and tragic death of 29-year-old Japheth Jesse Obanner, who was struck and killed by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 70 near Snowhill Church Road on the evening of Saturday, November 8, 2025.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), the accident occurred around 6:08 p.m. when Obanner, walking in dark clothing along an unlit section of the highway, was hit by an eastbound 2001 Ford F550 driven by 75-year-old Joan Marie Carter from South Dakota. Carter was unharmed in the incident, and investigators cited Obanner’s location in the roadway and possible impairment as contributing factors.

After reviewing the evidence, authorities confirmed that no charges would be filed in relation to the crash. While this decision provides some clarity, it does little to ease the sorrow felt by those who knew Obanner.
