The FBI has confirmed that the deadly attack on a Michigan church, which left four people dead and the building destroyed by fire, was motivated by the gunman’s anti-religious beliefs targeting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Authorities identified the shooter as Thomas Jacob Sanford, who was killed by law enforcement at the scene. Investigators described the attack as a “targeted act of violence,” citing Sanford’s longstanding hostility toward the Mormon community.

Special Agent Jennifer Runyan, head of the FBI’s Detroit field office, stated in a prerecorded message, “I am confirming this is a targeted act of violence believed to be motivated by the assailant’s anti-religious beliefs against the Mormon religious community.”
Friends of Sanford reportedly said he had harbored resentment toward the church for some time. The attack has sent shockwaves through both local residents and members of the Mormon community nationwide.
The FBI continues to investigate the incident and work with local authorities to understand all circumstances surrounding the attack.
Four lives were tragically lost, and the church building was completely destroyed in the blaze set by Sanford during the attack.
