A woman and her 4-month-old infant girl were fatally shot by police during a domestic disturbance incident at Oval Spring Apartments in Independence, Missouri, on Thursday afternoon. Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman confirmed the officer-involved shooting during a press conference.

Officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance with potential assault near Larkspur Lane and M-291 Frontage Road. Upon arrival, police encountered a woman holding a knife, leading to officers opening fire. The woman and infant were killed; no officers were injured.
One officer discharged their weapon and, along with two other responding officers, has been placed on administrative leave. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office is closely monitoring the independent investigation by the Police Involved Investigation Team. Chief Dustman withheld identities and details but emphasized officers followed training protocols.
