A tragic incident has left the Natchez community reeling after 42-year-old Lashonda Dixon lost her life early Sunday morning, falling into a storm drain along Aldrich Street near Brenham Avenue during heavy rainfall.
According to authorities, emergency responders were dispatched around 2:30 a.m. following a 911 call reporting that two individuals had fallen into a drain under maintenance. One person managed to escape and immediately alerted rescuers, but Dixon was swept away by rushing water before help could reach her.

Fire Chief Robert Arrington described the rescue operation as extremely challenging, requiring crews to break apart concrete around a manhole to access the underground system. Dixon’s body was eventually recovered approximately 20 feet from the initial fall.
Police Chief Cal Green expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating, “It’s very tragic. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones.” Investigators are examining whether Dixon’s death resulted from the fall itself or drowning due to the storm conditions.
Friends and neighbors remember Dixon as a kindhearted and joyful woman who deeply cared for her family. Many have begun leaving flowers and candles near the scene in tribute to her memory.
City officials are reviewing safety measures in the area to prevent similar accidents, including evaluating signage and protections around stormwater construction zones.
