A Newport News man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following a deadly shooting on November 11, 2025, at the Brennon Pointe Apartments. Police found 19-year-old Neveah Harris in the doorway of an apartment with a gunshot wound, and she was later pronounced dead by medics at the scene.
Detectives’ investigation revealed that Harris had been involved in a dispute with 21-year-old Kanye Smith, who was at his mother’s apartment at the time of the incident. Smith’s mother told police that Harris and Smith had been arguing when Harris allegedly charged at Smith with a knife. She reported hearing a gunshot, then witnessing Harris collapse on the floor while Smith fled with the weapon.
Smith later came forward on November 13 to give a statement, claiming that Harris had threatened him with a knife and that he accidentally shot her while attempting to wrestle the gun away from her. However, detectives said Smith’s account did not match the evidence of Harris’s wounds.
Smith had a prior history of domestic assault involving Harris in April of the same year. He has been charged with second-degree murder, discharging a firearm in an occupied building, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Smith is scheduled to appear in court on January 29, 2026. The investigation is ongoing, and the weapon involved has not been recovered.
