A violent offender has been sentenced to four years and 11 months after carrying out a brutal knife attack on a man he had known for years in Radford, Nottingham.
Mohamed Gawi, 26, confronted the victim on Norton Street on 3 May 2025. During the assault, Gawi repeatedly swung a knife, stabbing the man in the armpit, which caused a partially collapsed lung, and also cutting his hand. The victim, who had played football and socialised with Gawi the day before, required hospital treatment and surgery for his injuries.

The attack, which lasted about three minutes, included Gawi holding the knife to the victim’s neck multiple times and stealing his phone before fleeing. CCTV footage captured him throwing the knife into a garden, and police later recovered the weapon along with blood-stained clothing and two additional blades from Gawi’s flat on Egypt Road.
Gawi pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife in a public place. At Nottingham Crown Court on 23 October, he was sentenced for his crimes.
Detective Constable Octavia Watson highlighted the severity of the attack, noting it was both public and sustained. “The attack could very easily have resulted in even more serious injury,” she said. “Anyone carrying a knife in Nottingham needs to be aware of our CCTV coverage and policing — carrying a knife will lead to arrest and imprisonment.”
The victim continues to experience pain and anxiety from the assault, fearing for his safety when leaving his home. The sentencing underscores Nottinghamshire Police’s commitment to tackling knife crime in the city.
