Preliminary findings indicate that Pearce was driving a 2017 Ford F-350 westbound in the 1300 block of East 8th Street when he entered an active construction zone that had been closed to traffic. Investigators said both westbound lanes were shut down at the time, with cones and signage in place to redirect motorists safely around the work area.

Pearce allegedly drove past the traffic control devices and continued into the restricted section of roadway, where his truck struck a parked backhoe. The impact caused catastrophic damage, and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that his family has been notified of the tragedy.

The Odessa Police Department’s Traffic Unit remains on scene gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of its ongoing investigation. Authorities will examine whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the collision.

City officials reminded drivers to slow down and follow detours in construction areas, emphasizing that work zones pose heightened risks for motorists, pedestrians, and road crews alike.

Benjamin Pearce’s death has left loved ones and community members mourning the loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced as the investigation continues.
