Authorities have confirmed that 23-year-old Gregory Douglas Harper of Pinson has died following a single-vehicle crash in east Jefferson County.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office reported that Harper passed away at 2:35 a.m. Wednesday at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he had been taken after the accident. Despite medical efforts, his injuries proved fatal.
Investigators say Harper was driving alone when his vehicle left the roadway in the 7100 block of Highway 79 in Pinson and struck a tree. No other vehicles were involved.
Officials have not yet released details on the exact time of the crash or what caused the vehicle to leave the road. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. Single-vehicle crashes can involve factors such as speed, fatigue, medical emergencies, or road conditions, though it is not yet clear if any of these played a role.
Harper’s passing has deeply affected the Pinson community, leaving friends and loved ones mourning the loss of someone so young. The sheriff’s office is expected to release additional details as the investigation continues.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks drivers face, particularly during early-morning hours when road conditions can be challenging.
