The Pottsville community is honoring the life and legacy of Kevin Keating, former Crimson Tide head football coach and longtime English teacher, who passed away Thursday at the age of 70. His name is etched into the history of Pottsville athletics and education, leaving behind an enduring impact on both the football field and in the classroom.

Keating devoted more than three decades of his life to Pottsville Area High School, beginning his teaching career in 1980. For 34 years, he guided students through literature and language, offering lessons that extended far beyond textbooks. Beloved for his approachable nature and steady guidance, he became a favorite among generations of students.
A Coaching Legacy
In 1986, after serving several years as an assistant, Keating became head coach of the Crimson Tide, leading the program for more than 20 seasons across two stints. His career record of 166-110-4 remains the best in Pottsville football history. For his players, he was far more than a coach—he was a motivator, mentor, and role model who instilled discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
The 2000s were a golden era under Keating’s leadership. His teams captured three consecutive District XI Championships (2004–2006) and three Eastern Football Conference titles. Twice, in 2005 and 2006, the Crimson Tide finished as Class 3A state runners-up, cementing some of the program’s greatest moments.
Beyond Pottsville
After stepping down in 1999, Keating expanded his coaching career at Lafayette College before returning home to Pottsville in 2003. He later closed out his coaching journey as head coach of Shenandoah Valley from 2017 to 2019, remaining committed to the game he loved even as he faced health challenges.
His impact was formally recognized in 2018, when he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his contributions to high school athletics across the state.
A Lasting Influence
For former students and players, Keating’s legacy goes far beyond records and championships. In the classroom, he inspired curiosity and confidence; on the field, he pushed athletes to exceed their limits while reminding them of the importance of character.
“He was a great man and a great coach,” the Pottsville Area Athletic Department said in tribute—a sentiment echoed by countless others whose lives he touched.
