A violent confrontation at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, sparked a heavy police response on Friday afternoon after reports surfaced that a gun was displayed during a student fight.
According to officials, officers were dispatched to the campus on Dixon Drive shortly after the altercation broke out. What began as a physical brawl between several students quickly escalated when one participant allegedly brandished a firearm, prompting panic among students and staff.
Police arrived within minutes, placing the school on lockdown and securing the scene to ensure everyone’s safety. No gunshots were fired during the incident, though one student sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency personnel.
Authorities later confirmed that a weapon was recovered, but it remains unclear whether it was a real firearm or a replica. Investigators are now working to determine how it was brought onto school grounds and who was responsible.
In a statement, the Raleigh Police Department said an investigation is ongoing and potential charges may follow depending on the findings.
School administrators praised the quick response of staff and officers in containing the situation before it could escalate further.
“The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority,” said a Wake County Public Schools spokesperson. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and will take all necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.”
Parents were notified through the district’s emergency alert system, and many gathered outside the school as police worked to secure the area. Classes resumed later in the afternoon after authorities confirmed there was no ongoing threat.
The district announced that counseling services will be made available to students shaken by the incident. Officials are also reviewing school security measures, including potential increases in on-campus police presence.
The Raleigh Police Department has urged anyone with video footage or firsthand information about the fight to come forward as the investigation continues.
