Weddington, NC – The community of Weddington is mourning the loss of Michael “Mike” Verardo, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant and decorated infantryman of the 82nd Airborne Division, whose life stood as a powerful testament to courage, perseverance, and service.

Michael Verardo’s story is one of extraordinary resilience. In 2010, while deployed to Afghanistan, he was gravely wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED). The injuries he sustained required more than 120 surgeries and years of demanding rehabilitation. Despite unimaginable challenges, he refused to let his circumstances define him.
Through strength and determination, Mike embraced his “second chance at life” with a mission to uplift others. He became a mentor and advocate for fellow wounded veterans, inspiring countless individuals with his story of survival and hope. His participation in adaptive sports, community initiatives, and church activities reflected a deep commitment to helping others live with courage and dignity.
Beyond the battlefield, Michael was admired for his unwavering compassion and devotion to his family, friends, and community. Those who knew him recall a man who carried himself with humility and grace, even in the face of relentless pain. His faith and sense of purpose left a lasting imprint on everyone around him.
