A familiar face on Rockford’s east side is gone after 63-year-old Clark Robinson was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking along East State Street early Monday morning.
The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office identified Robinson Tuesday as the victim of the 5 a.m. collision in the 4800 block of East State Street near Dempster Road. The longtime Rockford resident was pronounced dead at a local hospital after being transported with critical injuries.

Police say Robinson was walking along the heavily traveled corridor when he was hit. The driver immediately stopped, called 911, and has remained fully cooperative with investigators. No charges or citations have been issued at this time.
“Clark was one of those people everyone seemed to know,” said neighbor Denise Carter, who often saw him on his morning walks. “He’d wave at every car, every dog, every kid on their way to school. This stretch of road took a good man from us.”
The crash occurred during the pre-dawn hours when visibility is low and commuter traffic begins to build. Investigators are reviewing speed, lighting, crosswalk markings, and any available video as they piece together the fatal moments. The Rockford Police Traffic Unit is leading the probe.
Since news broke, a growing memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten notes has appeared near the site. Many passersby have slowed or stopped to pay respects to a man remembered for his friendly smile and daily presence along the route.
City officials say the tragedy has renewed calls for enhanced pedestrian safety measures on East State Street, including brighter lighting and possible speed-reduction initiatives.
