A somber memorial has taken shape in Rockville, Maryland, near the intersection where 11-year-old Summer Lim, a sixth-grade student at Earle B. Wood Middle School, tragically lost her life on Thursday afternoon. Summer was struck by a school bus while riding her bicycle home, leaving her family, classmates, and the broader community in shock.
According to Montgomery County police, the accident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Bauer Drive near Russett Road. Both Summer and the school bus were traveling east when the bus made a right turn onto southbound Russett Road, colliding with the young girl. Despite the efforts of first responders, Summer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The quiet residential neighborhood has been transformed by grief, as community members gather to leave flowers, candles, and stuffed animals at the site. Neighbors described the memorial as a heartfelt tribute to a young life taken far too soon.
“I wanted to just leave a memorial for her. I’ve been praying for her,” said neighbor Liesl Ament, placing flowers among the growing tributes.
Families in the area expressed deep fear and sadness following the tragedy. One local parent, Alexander Caceres, shared how the incident affected his daughter:
“Very bad. I mean, my daughter didn’t even want to go to school today.”
Montgomery County Public Schools confirmed that the bus driver involved has been placed on administrative leave, consistent with standard procedure after a serious crash. Police said the investigation remains ongoing and may take several weeks as officials review video footage, witness statements, and the mechanical condition of the bus.

A vigil was scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ at Manor Woods, where friends, classmates, and families plan to gather, light candles, and honor Summer’s memory while supporting one another through their grief.
