KILGORE, Texas — Heartbreak has gripped the Kilgore and Sabine communities following the tragic deaths of 16-year-old Sabine High School student Hailey Blake and her father, 40-year-old Shawn Blake, who were fatally shot Sunday afternoon at Hugh Camp Memorial Park.

Emergency crews responded quickly after reports of gunfire, but despite paramedics’ efforts, both Hailey and Shawn were pronounced dead at the scene from critical gunshot wounds.
Authorities have identified the suspected shooter as 18-year-old Christopher Wayne Hicks Jr., believed to be Hailey’s boyfriend. Hicks was also found at the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. His current condition has not been released, and charges are expected as investigators continue their work.
According to the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office and Kilgore Police Department, the shooting is believed to have stemmed from a personal dispute, though the exact motive remains under investigation. Law enforcement has reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to community safety.
Remembering Hailey and Shawn
The loss of Hailey and her father has left the Sabine Independent School District community shattered. Hailey, a junior at Sabine High School, was remembered by classmates and teachers as a kind, intelligent young woman with a bright future.
“Hailey had this light about her that made everyone around her feel seen and cared for,” one teacher shared. “Her presence in our school was something special, and we are heartbroken beyond words.”
Her father, Shawn Blake, was described as a devoted and loving dad who never missed a chance to support his daughter. Friends and neighbors remembered him as a hardworking, kind man whose life revolved around his family.
The tragedy has united the community in grief, with friends, neighbors, and school officials rallying to support the Blake family during this unimaginable loss.
