Scotch Plains, NJ – The community of Scotch Plains is in mourning after a tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of 13-year-old Nico Lombardi, a student at Malcolm E. Nettingham Middle School.

Mayor Josh Losardo confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 2:12 p.m. at the intersection of Mountain and Mountainview Avenues.
“Our Police and Fire Departments responded immediately, and the juvenile was transported to University Hospital in Newark. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the 13-year-old student was pronounced dead,” Losardo said in a statement, calling the tragedy “a heartbreaking loss felt across our entire community.”
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education has arranged grief counseling for students and staff, while support services are also being made available to first responders who were at the scene. Both the Union County Police Department and the Scotch Plains Police Department are actively investigating the crash.

“Yesterday, beloved Nico Lombardi was tragically taken from us far too soon in a devastating bike and motor vehicle accident,” the family shared. “As they navigate this unimaginable loss, we are coming together to support them. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help.”
