Dukes had been receiving medical care since October 21, following a five-day hospitalization earlier in the month. Dukes’ passing marks the fourth inmate death in the county within a span of just three weeks, raising significant concerns about the conditions inside the Shelby County Jail. Inmate deaths have been recorded on October 29, November 1, and November 7, with the latest tragedy involving Dukes. Previous deaths included 24-year-old Dalton Goddard, found unresponsive in his cell, 40-year-old Antonio First, also discovered unresponsive, and 41-year-old Christopher Steele, who died in a hospital after being hospitalized for undisclosed reasons since November 1.
