Heartbreak has gripped the communities of Granville, Alton, and beyond after a devastating house fire claimed the lives of three teenagers and left another critically injured early Monday morning.
The fire broke out just after 5:00 a.m. on September 1 at a rural residence along 430th Street, approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Granville. The Granville Fire Department, upon arrival, was met with heavy smoke pouring from the home. Due to the intensity of the blaze, mutual aid was quickly requested from neighboring fire departments and emergency services.

Inside the home, firefighters located four victims in dire condition. All were rushed to Orange City Area Health, where 16-year-old Kolten Hofmeyer of Alton tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The three remaining victims were transferred to specialized burn units.
Authorities later confirmed that 16-year-old Bryleigh Koob and her brother, 17-year-old Ashton Koob, both of Granville, also died from their injuries while receiving treatment at hospitals outside the area. A fourth victim, an unnamed 16-year-old, remains hospitalized in critical condition at a burn center in Minnesota.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is spearheading the investigation into the cause of the blaze. While the origin has not yet been determined, officials are working diligently to understand what sparked the tragedy.
Community Grieves Unimaginable Loss
The loss has shaken Sioux County to its core. Families, classmates, and friends of the victims are left grappling with the sudden and overwhelming grief.
Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst urged residents to lean on one another in this time of sorrow, stating:
“We are created for community—for relationships that strengthen and sustain us. This tragedy involves multiple families and impacts an entire community. Please stop and pray with us for everyone affected, and continue to do so in the weeks ahead.”
The MOC-Floyd Valley Community School District has mobilized counselors, clergy, and pastoral care teams to support grieving students and families. District officials emphasized the importance of community strength and solidarity as students and faculty navigate the heartbreaking loss.
Emergency Response Efforts
The firefighting response was extensive, with the Granville Fire Department receiving support from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Hospers Fire Department, and multiple ambulance services from Alton, Orange City, Hospers, Paullina, Sheldon, and Granville itself. Despite their swift efforts, the severity of the fire left little time to save the young victims.

The three teenagers are being remembered for their kind hearts, bright spirits, and the joy they brought to those around them. Friends and classmates describe them as full of promise, with futures that were tragically cut short.
