A tragic shooting in Smiths Station, Alabama, on Sunday evening has left one man dead and another facing murder charges.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a 9-1-1 call around 6:30 p.m. on October 19, 2025, reporting that a man had been shot in the chest at a residence on the 8000 block of Lee Road 246. Officers arrived within minutes and found the victim suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel and Life Flight were dispatched, and the victim — identified as 34-year-old Anthony Hodge of Smiths Station — was rushed to Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City. Despite life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Deputies quickly tracked down the suspect, 20-year-old Jeremy Chandler Wiggins of Phenix City, in the parking lot of a nearby store. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Lee County Detention Center, where he now faces a murder charge. Authorities revealed that the shooting occurred at Hodge’s residence and that both men were acquaintances.
The victim’s body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. Wiggins is currently being held without bond, pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.
