CHICAGO, Ill. — The South Loop community is reeling after the tragic death of 31-year-old Romeca Meeks, who was fatally shot Monday morning near Cermak Road and State Street. Authorities confirm the alleged shooter, Holly Johnson, remains in custody as the investigation continues.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded around 9:35 a.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire. When they arrived, Meeks was found lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Preliminary reports suggest the incident began with a physical altercation between Meeks and Johnson. Investigators say Johnson, who held a valid concealed carry license, allegedly fired a weapon at close range during the confrontation. Witnesses told police the situation escalated further when Carlos “Losos” Way, the father of Meeks’ child, reportedly placed her in a headlock just moments before shots rang out.
Family members describe Meeks as a devoted mother and hardworking individual who had just dropped her young son off at school that morning. “She was just trying to live her life and raise her son. This is beyond devastating for all of us,” one relative shared.
