BATON ROUGE, La. (Sept. 1, 2025) – The Southern University community is grieving the tragic loss of 19-year-old sophomore Roderick Forkner, who was killed in a Labor Day shooting in Baton Rouge early Monday morning.

Police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m. on Government Street near South Foster Drive, when the victims’ vehicle was struck by multiple rounds. Forkner was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second man who was injured is expected to survive.
The incident left behind a devastating scene marked by flashing lights, police tape, and the grief of loved ones struggling to make sense of the violence.
A Promising Life Cut Short
