A mass shooting at the American Fish Company restaurant in Southport’s Yacht Basin has left three people dead and nine others wounded, shaking the tight-knit coastal community and prompting a joint investigation involving local police and the FBI.

The attack began shortly after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, when a gunman opened fire from a boat positioned on the Cape Fear River, targeting both patrons and employees. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as crowds fled for safety while multiple rounds tore through the busy waterfront venue.
Authorities have not officially named the suspect, but reports have identified him as 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge, formerly known as Sean William DeBevoise. A former U.S. Marine, Edge has a history of controversial lawsuits, conspiracy claims, and erratic behavior, including a bizarre legal dispute involving country singer Kellie Pickler. Investigators are now looking into whether his mental health struggles may have contributed to Saturday’s violence.
After the gunfire, the suspect fled by boat toward Oak Island. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and working to determine whether the attack was premeditated or random. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
Southport Mayor Aaron Valdez described the shooting as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and extended condolences to the victims’ loved ones. “This senseless act of violence has left our community reeling,” Valdez said. “We will stand together to support the victims and ensure justice is served.”
Law enforcement is urging anyone with information about the suspect or the events of that night to come forward as the investigation continues.
