Newton County, Georgia — Authorities have confirmed that reports of an active shooter at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College Newton campus were the result of a swatting incident, not a real emergency.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) said deputies and several law enforcement agencies rushed to the campus after receiving a distress call about a possible shooter. Upon arrival, officers conducted a full sweep of the area and found no active threat.

“Deputies will remain on campus to ensure the area remains secure while the investigation continues,” the NCSO stated in an official update posted to Facebook.
The incident briefly caused fear among students and staff before officials verified it was a hoax call. Investigators are now working to trace the source of the swatting call, which is a serious criminal offense under federal law.
Authorities are reminding the public that false emergency reports waste valuable resources and can put both officers and civilians at unnecessary risk.
