A 16-year-old boy, identified as Marquis Champion, was fatally shot late Monday night near 79th and Hampton in Milwaukee. Two other teenagers, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Milwaukee police say the shooting stemmed from an argument, though it is unclear whether the victims knew one another. Witnesses expressed shock at the violence. Linda Read, who lives in the area, said, “Kids are too young to be violent like that… I don’t even like to go outside half the time because of this.”
City officials are calling for community action to prevent future tragedies. Adam Procell, director of Milwaukee’s Office of Community Wellness and Safety, emphasized the need for nonviolent conflict resolution:
“We have to find a way to resolve arguments without violence… You just can’t keep shooting people because you don’t like what they say or what they do.”
