A longtime United States Postal Service (USPS) employee, Steven Marks, 58, lost his life after an intoxicated driver fleeing a previous accident crashed into his mail truck in northwest Houston, authorities confirmed.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the suspect, Jose Humberto Romero, 48, was speeding away from an earlier minor collision when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the rear of Marks’ postal truck along Antoine Drive on Friday, October 18.

Deputies say Marks was delivering mail to homes in the area when the crash occurred. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Sheriff Gonzalez said Romero was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxication manslaughter. Investigators revealed that Romero had previously been arrested in 2023 on a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) charge. His bond has been set at $250,000, and court records show he currently has no attorney listed.
In a statement released to the media, the United States Postal Service mourned the death of Marks, describing him as a devoted employee who had served the agency for 28 years.
“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life yesterday in a two-vehicle accident in Houston, TX, involving our Postal family member with 28 years of service,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Counseling services are being offered to employees at the Cornerstone Post Office as the investigation continues.”
Authorities continue to examine the sequence of events leading to the fatal crash, including the extent of Romero’s intoxication and whether any additional charges may follow.
