A devastating house fire in rural Sioux County has claimed the lives of three teenagers and left a fourth in critical condition, shattering the close-knit community of Granville and surrounding towns.

The blaze erupted around 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at a residence on 430th Street, roughly two miles northwest of Granville. Firefighters with the Granville Fire Department responded within minutes, but upon arrival, they found the home already engulfed in heavy smoke and flames, according to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.
Inside, four teenagers were pulled from the burning home and rushed for emergency treatment. Despite the desperate efforts of first responders and hospital staff, three did not survive.
Authorities identified the victims as:
Kolten Hofmeyer, 16, who died after being transported to Orange City Area Health.
Bryleigh Koob, 16, who later passed away after being transferred for advanced care.
Ashton Koob, 17, Bryleigh’s older brother, who was also pronounced dead at a specialty hospital.
The fourth victim, a 16-year-old male, remains hospitalized in Minnesota in critical condition at a burn unit. His name has not yet been released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting local officials in determining what sparked the deadly blaze.
Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst issued a heartfelt statement following the tragedy, urging residents to lean on one another during this painful time:
“We are created for community—for relationships that strengthen and sustain us. In this sad tragedy, there are several families involved and a large community affected. This is heavy, heartbreaking, and overwhelming. Please stop and pray with us for everyone affected by this. Please continue to pray in the upcoming weeks.”
The loss has left Sioux County reeling. Vigils, prayer gatherings, and fundraisers are already being organized to support the grieving families. Community members have described the teens as bright, kindhearted, and deeply loved.
Kolten Hofmeyer was remembered for his warm personality and active involvement in school life.
Bryleigh and Ashton Koob, inseparable siblings, were admired for their compassion and loyalty to family and friends.
Neighbors say the tragedy is a painful reminder of the fragility of life, but also a moment to show resilience and unity.
