Toni Pierce-Sands, a celebrated former soloist with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and co-founder of TU Dance, has passed away at the age of 63 in Minneapolis after a courageous battle with cancer. Her death marks the end of a profound and influential career that reshaped the dance world — both on stage and within the community.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Toni’s passion for dance led her to New York, where she joined the Alvin Ailey company as a featured soloist. She performed in some of Ailey’s most iconic works, including Revelations, Cry, and Rainbow Round My Shoulder, captivating audiences with her powerful presence and emotional storytelling. Her artistry transcended the U.S., with performances in Europe, including collaborations with Tanz Forum in Germany and Rick Odums in Paris.

Toni’s greatest impact, however, came after her return to Minnesota, where she, alongside her husband Uri Sands, co-founded TU Dance in 2004. The company’s vision was to merge diverse dance traditions, from ballet to modern to African-based styles, reflecting a multicultural identity. Under her leadership, TU Dance became a cornerstone of the Minnesota dance community, offering a space for dancers of all backgrounds to study and grow. Toni also served as the Director of University Dance Theatre at the University of Minnesota and taught at Macalester College.
Her dedication to dance and education earned her numerous accolades, including the 2004 McKnight Dance Fellowship and the 2011 Sage Award for Outstanding Dance Educator. Through TU Dance Center, launched in 2011, Toni provided a nurturing space for emerging dancers, continuing her work long after leaving the stage.
