A tragic afternoon in Kaplan turned devastating on Friday, when two local residents, 65-year-old Julien Lawrence, Jr. and 41-year-old Alexis Jackson, lost their lives in a horrific head-on collision on Louisiana Highway 14, just east of Pirates Lane in Vermilion Parish. The crash, which occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m., has left the community reeling.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop I, Lawrence was driving a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria eastbound when it collided with a 2023 Cadillac Escalade traveling westbound. The collision occurred as the two vehicles neared a small bridge on the highway, where one of the vehicles crossed the center line, leading to a direct head-on impact. Authorities have not yet determined which vehicle crossed into the opposite lane.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the aftermath of the crash. Lawrence and Jackson, who had been seated in the rear of the Ford, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Cadillac, as well as another passenger from the Ford, were transported to local hospitals with injuries. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
As part of the investigation, toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. Authorities are also reviewing whether seat belts were worn by all passengers and are considering whether distractions or impairment may have contributed to the crash.
