A quiet Sunday morning turned to tragedy on November 2, 2025, when 24-year-old Jose Vicente Sanchez of Umatilla lost his life in a devastating head-on collision on U.S. Route 395, near milepost 3, just outside Hermiston, Oregon. The crash occurred around 9:24 a.m. when a southbound Volkswagen Passat crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a Nissan 370, in which Jose was a passenger.
Jose was riding with 25-year-old Hadasa Esther Sanchez, also of Umatilla, who sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Tyler John Garrett, a 24-year-old from Hermiston and the driver of the Volkswagen, was critically injured and also transported to the hospital. Tragically, Jose was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jose was known to friends and family as a joyful, generous soul with a warm smile and a caring nature that left a lasting impression on his community. Described as deeply loyal and always ready with a laugh, he was the type of person whose presence brought comfort to others. The Oregon State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation, though the cause of the Volkswagen’s lane departure remains under review.
Though the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not yet determined what caused the Volkswagen to cross into the northbound lane. The Oregon State Police, Hermiston Police Department, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, and Umatilla County Fire District 1 all responded to the tragic incident.
