KINGSTON, Jamaica — The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, is grappling with the sudden death of a female medical student, whose body was discovered in her dorm room at George Alleyne Hall on Thursday morning under circumstances described by authorities as suspicious.
According to early reports, the student was found unresponsive by her roommate, who immediately contacted campus security and emergency personnel. Authorities confirmed that officers from the Area Four Police Headquarters arrived promptly to secure the scene and begin an investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps of Area Four stated that while initial findings suggest the possibility of self-harm, the investigation is ongoing and other explanations have not been ruled out.
“Our team is carefully examining all aspects of this incident to understand what happened,” ACP Phipps said.
The student’s identity and age have not been disclosed, as authorities continue to notify her family.
UWI Mona Campus Registrar Donovan Stanberry acknowledged the situation, noting the university will refrain from further public commentary to respect the investigation and the family’s privacy.
In the wake of the incident, the university has enhanced mental health support and counseling services for residents of George Alleyne Hall and other nearby dormitories. Students and staff affected by the tragedy are being encouraged to seek assistance.
