In Charlotte, North Carolina, authorities made a heartbreaking discovery after responding to a welfare check: a 3-year-old girl was found alone in her home, beside her mother’s body, which had been decomposing for approximately one week.
The child—who reportedly survived by drinking juice and eating cereal—believed her mother was merely sleeping. She was able to use the TV remote to watch cartoons and was apparently already potty trained, allowing her to care for some of her basic needs.
Neighbors alerted emergency services when a foul odor emanated from the residence, and the mother, identified as 32-year-old Anbrielle Davis, was found deceased on the floor. Investigators believe Davis passed away several days earlier due to health complications. Her body was decomposed, with signs of the onset of decay present.
After entering the home, first responders evaluated the little girl, who was unharmed, and transferred her into the care of child protective services.
The community is left stunned by this tragic situation, and local agencies are now working to provide support for the child and determine how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
