Authorities in Douglas County, Illinois, are investigating a devastating house fire that tragically claimed the life of 42-year-old Jennifer M. Chandler early Thursday morning in the Village of Garrett.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 2:11 a.m. after receiving reports of a home on fire near the intersection of Adams and 3rd Streets. Upon arrival, firefighters and deputies found the residence fully engulfed in flames. Despite their swift efforts to control the blaze and protect nearby structures, the fire had already caused catastrophic damage to the home.

Once the flames were extinguished, a search of the property led to the heartbreaking discovery of Jennifer Chandler’s body inside. Authorities confirmed that she was a resident of the home.
Douglas County Chief Deputy Adam Weinstock stated that the house was destroyed beyond repair. A joint investigation is underway, led by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Douglas County Coroner’s Office, the Atwood Fire Department, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office. Investigators are currently examining evidence from the scene, as well as reviewing witness accounts and nearby security footage, in an attempt to determine the fire’s cause and origin.
